Over the past several days, I have received a number of client requests inquiring what they can do in the event an active shooter situation occurs at their place of business.

First, it is important to note that employees can assist in preventing and preparing for potential active shooter situations. FEMA had developed an on-line course that provides excellence guidance to individuals, including managers and employees, so that they can prepare to respond to an active shooter situation.  This course is not written for law enforcement officers, but for non-law enforcement employees.

The course provides guidance in the following areas:

  1. Describe actions to take when confronted with an active shooter and responding law enforcement officials.
  2. Recognize potential workplace violence indicators.
  3. Describe actions to take to prevent and prepare for potential active shooter incidents.
  4. Describe how to manage the consequences of an active shooter incident.

The overall length of the course will vary for each individual. IS-907 takes approximately 45 minutes to complete.
