ASIS International Enters Standards Development Arena

Organization Launches Commission on Standards and Guidelines

Alexandria, VA (May 21, 2007) – ASIS International, the leading organization for security management professionals worldwide, announces a significant change in the focus of its Commission on Guidelines. ASIS will now actively contribute to the process of developing professional standards in the security arena.

Reflecting this new concentration on standards development, the ASIS Board of Directors has approved a name change from Commission on Guidelines to ASIS Commission on Standards and Guidelines.

Standards are a set of voluntary criteria, voluntary guidelines and best practices used to enhance the quality, performance, reliability and consistency of products, services and/or processes. In the United States and globally, standards are becoming a major influence on the security scene. They are seen as one of the major dynamic tools to help nations, communities, societies, organizations, and individuals improve their resilience in the face of security threats both natural and man-made. Management systems standards are the benchmark of best practices for development of incident preparedness, security, and operational/business continuity management within public and private organizations. Command and control, physical asset protection, and technical standards will impact how security systems will be designed, deployed, and operated.

International, national and regional standards bodies have initiated aggressive standards development programs that will profoundly impact security practitioners. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO)—the international body of such standards development—has itself launched a technical committee that is preparing security standards that will directly impact domestic and international communities. ASIS will play an important role in this technical committee, ISO/TC 223: Societal Security, by lending the experience and expertise of its 35,000 members to the ISO effort.

To gain the most advantageous position possible, ASIS is establishing strategic relationships with national, regional and international standards bodies to provide a voice of security professionals in the standards development arena and to co-author standards of importance to the security profession.

In the United States, ASIS will also continue to play an important role in coordinating with both the Congress and the Department of Homeland Security to ensure that the security expertise of its members is included in the standards development processes that are currently in progress. ASIS has become a member of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Homeland Security Standards Panel (HSSP) that is assisting DHS in the development and adoption of consensus standards critical to homeland security in the U.S.

“The Commission will continue to publish guidelines both in support of standards as well as independently on important issues in security that may not lend themselves to the creation of standards,” said F. Mark Geraci, CPP, Chairman, ASIS Commission on Standards and Guidelines.

“The Commission strongly encourages active participation in this new and exciting venture to have ASIS International recognized as a world-class partner in standards initiatives,” said Geraci. “Only by driving the process can we assure that the interests of the security executive will be reflected in international standards.”
