New Jersey has one of the nation’s most stringent set of school security requirements. Among other things, twice each year schools are required to hold an active shooter drill; an evacuation drill; a bomb threat drill; and a lockdown drill. According to a 2010 survey conducted by the USDE, New Jersey is one of only a few states that already require regular security drills.
The New Jersey Department of Education’s Office of School Preparedness and Emergency Planning , told State Board members that the State plans to institute unannounced security drills and visits at New Jersey schools as a way to check security preparedness.
